ABOUT

STATEMENT

Born in 1958 in Hertfordshire,  Sandra Ann Berti originally trained as a PA and spent many years working for a Pharmaceutical  Company, then a Solicitor's Office. Later in life, after always being creative, followed her heart, achieving a Degree in 2-Dimensional Design at The University of Hertfordshire. In 2023 she emerged as a Professional Artist and now works from her Loft Studio in a Hertfordshire Village, called Kimpton.

"Home is a simple Greek Style, mainly white with splashes of colour which reflects in my work as is the love of the mediterranean, especially The Greek Islands. The garden is another of my passions, I love to visit different gardens which always inspires, plus things I like along the way. Connecting the interior and the exterior.

The feel and style of my work reflects how I like to live, just the simple life, we need to reflect on calmness, peace and joy, just enjoy the simple things in life.

Often working on several paintings at one time, things occur from either the subconscious or a direct response. Wood, especially old wood is my preferred choice with its grooves and patina, what a great canvas. Layers of bold colour paint textures are applied wildly with an element of process, then unearthed with mark making. The physical rhythm of painting comes from my heart, immersed with constant decision making of what to do next. Drawn to the distressed and unfinished, focusing on form and space. The odd remnant of collage, mono print, plus relevant words can also be added. Always looking for that abstract connection with blotches & tokens. Expecting nothing grand, just a simple naive composition of flattened shapes often overlaying distressed backgrounds, where the viewer can have their own interpretation"

simplicity - space - blotches - tokens

Inspired by Artists Jean-Michel Basquiat for his graffiti style, Patrick Heron for his bold use of colour, Howard Hodgkin for his contemporary colour & space and Barbara Hepworth for her minimalist sculptures.
